Understand the Key Functions and Key Modes used in our system.

Key Function

This is what the key does when you press it. The clue to understanding key functions is that the names are the answer to the question, “What happens if I push this button?” There are four key functions used in our system. Two work only with party lines, one is for direct beltpack-to-beltpack communication, one is to monitor an audio channel.

Talk - Always Listen (PL)

The crew member’s beltpack will always hear what is said on the indicated party line, whether or not the key is pressed. The crew member’s mic will open when the key is pressed.

Talk & Listen (PL)

The beltpack will not hear anything said on this party line unless the key is pressed. The beltpack microphone will be off unless the key is pressed. When the key is pressed two things will happen: the crew member’s mic will open, and voices of other crew on the party line will be heard. The primary use of this function is with the CRANE PL.

Talk (Beltpack to Beltpack)

When the key is pressed the crew member’s beltpack’s mic will open. Only the beltpack indicated on the display will hear what is said. This is the primary function of the REPLY key.

Listen (Audio Channel)

When the key is pressed the beltpack will listen to the designated audio channel. This is used for the COMTEK audio channel.

Key Modes

This is how the key behaves when you press it. There are three key modes.

Momentary

The assigned function will activate as long as the key is pressed, and stop when the key is released; it behaves like a walkie talkie. Most keys are in this mode.

Latching

The assigned function will activate when the key is pressed once, and end when the key is pressed a second time. The COMTEK channel key is in this mode.

Auto

In this mode, the key tries to figure out what you want it to be. When the key is pressed briefly it will behave as though in Latching Mode. If the key is held down for more than two seconds it will behave as though in Momentary Mode. Some keys on the operator, focus, dolly and crane tech beltpacks are in this mode.
